Backyard planning guide

Combine decking and landscaping for a more useful backyard.

Plan levels, movement and maintenance as one project so the deck, lawn, garden and access routes work together.

The best backyard layout starts with how the space will be used. A deck may create an entertaining zone, while lawn provides open space and garden beds soften boundaries. Planning these elements together helps avoid awkward steps, trapped water and narrow access.

Divide the yard into useful zones

List the activities the backyard needs to support: outdoor dining, children’s play, pets, garden beds, bins, storage or access to a shed. Give priority to clear walking routes and practical door-to-yard transitions before choosing decorative finishes.

Choose decking for the location

Timber such as Merbau provides a natural finish and requires periodic care. Composite boards offer a consistent appearance and different maintenance characteristics. The support frame, ground clearance, ventilation, finished height and connection to the home must suit the site—not only the board colour.

Natural or artificial grass?

Natural turf can provide a cooler, living surface but needs suitable soil preparation, watering and ongoing care. Artificial grass can reduce mowing and works well in selected low-maintenance areas, provided the base and drainage are correctly prepared. The right choice depends on sunlight, pets, usage and the owner’s maintenance preference.

Connect landscaping to levels and drainage

Retaining edges, sleepers, paths and concrete areas should be planned with the final ground levels. Water should move away from the building and not become trapped between a deck, garden bed and fence. Allow access for maintenance and do not bury fence components or block required ventilation.

For a combined project quote: sketch the area, add approximate dimensions, mark doors and drains, and send wide photos from each corner. Tell us which existing items will stay or be removed.
