Concreting guide

What to consider before concreting your driveway.

The visible finish matters, but excavation, preparation, levels and access have just as much influence on the completed job.

A driveway quote cannot be based on square metres alone. Two areas of the same size can require very different preparation depending on the existing surface, soil to be removed, fall, drainage, reinforcement and access for machinery and concrete delivery.

Start with measurements and access

Measure the approximate length and width, then photograph the driveway from the street and the house. Note narrow side access, low overhead clearance, existing concrete, garden structures and whether a bobcat can enter. Restricted access can change how excavation and material movement are completed.

Preparation beneath the concrete

The area normally needs appropriate excavation, a prepared and compacted base, formwork and reinforcement suited to the job. Existing concrete may need cutting, removal and disposal. The required construction should be confirmed for the expected use and actual site conditions rather than copied from another property.

Levels and drainage

Water must be directed away from buildings and managed without creating a problem for neighbouring land or the street. Existing door thresholds, garage levels, pits and surrounding landscaping all affect the finished levels. If crossover or drainage work is involved, owners should confirm council or authority requirements before work starts.

Plain or decorative finish?

Plain concrete is a practical option for many paths, slabs and driveways. Decorative and exposed-aggregate finishes can provide a different appearance but should be selected with the home, surrounding surfaces and maintenance expectations in mind. Colour and aggregate samples can vary from how they appear on a phone screen.

For an accurate starting quote: send dimensions, the suburb, intended use, preferred finish, access photos and details of any existing concrete or soil that must be removed.

Allow for site-specific costs

Excavation, bobcat work, soil removal, concrete cutting and disposal are separate considerations from placing new concrete.
